ENJOY A COSTA RICAN CULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN THE CLOUD FOREST!

Spend your Spring Break immersed in the Costa Rican rainforest on this 7-night / 8-day adventure to Volcan Arenal. Learn about the flora and fauna of this rich biodiverse environment while you make new friends.

Up in the cloud forest, sitting just outside of the fray of the Arenal/La Fortuna area is a small community named Chachagua where our hosts at the Institute for Collaborative Learning await us for an unforgettably rich Spring Break nature experience.

The Institute sits at the edge of the Arenal Conservation Area, Monteverde Cloud Forest and the Children’s Eternal Forest, three of the most coveted rainforest destinations for nature lovers due to their biodiversity, adventure activities, bird watching, and hiking trails. Our friends Maria and Ivan, along with local friends and family, will be our guides as we learn about the lush surroundings and make new local friends.

This family-friendly learning experience includes a visit to a wild animal rescue center, a chocolate making workshop at a local cacao farm, a soak in the natural volcanic hot springs, and other culturally immersive experiences. This tour is designed for the whole family to enjoy together, so bring the grandparents or the cousins, everyone is welcome! The bilingual education component is most suitable for children ages 5-12, and we will be welcoming a group of local children in this age range to participate in the learning alongside our group. Younger children are also welcome to join the adventure with an accompanying adult and teens are also most welcome.

Get ready to see sloths and macaws and the stunning profile of Volcan Arenal looming high into the clouds. Best yet, you will be surrounded by the best company. It will be an adventure you won’t soon forget!

This tour includes:

  • Transportation to/from San Jose International Airport and to all tour activities (must arrive and depart on designated days)

  • Family-friendly lodging in 4* accommodations

  • Meals; 7 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 2 dinners

8 Day/ 7 Night Itinerary

  • Arrival at SJO Airport. Welcome to Costa Rica!

Please be sure to arrive by noon on Saturday to ensure transfers from the San Jose (SJO) airport to the Arenal area in our group transportation. If you arrive at a later time we can arrange for a private transfer at an additional cost.

  • Welcome to Chachagua!

Settle into your week of vacation with a little gallo pinto y huevo (the typical Costa Rican breakfast!) at the hotel and take a dip in the swimming pool.

In the afternoon you will get to know our friends at the Institute for Collaborative Learning where our hosts will provide an orientation and overview of the week, tour of the school, games in the soccer field and a tasty dinner.

  • Local Connections in Costa Rica

We will start our day at I4CL connecting with local friends through games. Young people will learn core Spanish words needed to understand their experience over the week. Parents will learn some Costa Rican culture and history while visiting a local family for tortillas and cafecito.

  • Join Mary on the farm for a plant walk with a local herbalist. Then we will visit with a group of school children and enjoy an art class led by a local artist who will teach us how to make art with recycled things.

  • Animals and Environment

It is field trip day and we will visit Proyecto Asis (a local wild animal rescue center) to see sloths and macaws and so much more! We will learn about all of the animals that live in the area and how these scientists and volunteers rehabilitate them when they are in need, plus what we can do as visitors to ensure their wellbeing.

  • Learn about Costa Rican Cuisine

Learn about Costa Rican cuisine first hand by making food with your own hands! Our friends will teach us how to make typical foods from the region using fresh products from the farm. In the afternoon we will enjoy a Chocolate tour and make our very own bars to take home.

In the evening, if you still have gas in the tank we can take a night walk to hear the chicharras (cicadas) and see what other wild things are starting to come out at night.

  • What’s happening about town!?

Let’s check out the town of La Fortuna! We will walk the town center for a little sight seeing, shopping and treat tasting. Then we will round out the day with a luxurious soak at the hot springs. Ahhhhhhhh.

  • Departure day

Our time together has come to an end. We will miss you all as you make your way back to San Jose for departure.

Transportation to SJO is included and the van will leave the Arenal area in the morning arriving in San Jose by 12pm. So please plan to book your outgoing flights in the evening on Saturday to allow flex time for traffic delays or on Sunday. Hotel accommodations in San Jose or an optional two-day add on at the beach can be arranged for those that are interested.
